international consortium begins work on 22km eu-funded serbian rail scheme

construction has begun on a 22km-long bypass of the southern serbian city of nis. the project is being carried out by a consortium made up of serbia’s extra auto transport and china road and bridge, a subsidiary of china communications.
the є154m deal, awarded by serbian railways, will deliver a single-track, electrified line, with a maximum speed of 120km/h.
the project is part of a larger, eu-funded project, involving the modernisation and reconstruction of the 104km nis-to-dimitrovgrad line, which will connect with bulgaria’s network.
the bypass is due to be completed in 2027.
